As the R&D Team Leader (Robotics & Software Controls), you will oversee the in-house development and implementation of software, control systems, electronics and electrical hardware for our new products: the automated lifting and load orienting device, Roborigger and the motion monitoring system, Dynamic Motion System (DMS). You will be responsible for leading a team of highly capable graduate mechatronic and electrical engineers as well as managing external liaison with suppliers and university research staff assisting us with the project. Your success will expand the TENSA Equipment’s capabilities to provide innovative solutions that improve safety and efficiency in the oil and gas and construction sectors while establishing your personal brand as subject matter expert in this field.
As the R&D Team Leader (Robotics & Software Controls), you will be responsible for:
Leading a team of graduate engineers and managing liaison with external consultants and suppliers.
Developing the electronic and electrical hardware for Roborigger. Components include PMAC motors controlled by our custom designed hardware and software using accelerometers, gyros and magnetometers in an ARM based platform.
Upgrading the PLC controls to our existing gangway products
Overseeing the future development of software for DMS and managing its manufacturing, assembly and testing. This requires development, implementation and management of traceability, validation and quality control procedures.
Experience: At least 5 years full time experience where you have successfully developed and implemented control and hardware systems. A good understanding of the methodology for delivering commercial grade software and control systems and hardware solutions will be highly valued.
Education: Honours degree in Electrical, Electronic or Mechatronics engineering
Skills: You must have the following skills
Be fluent in programming ARM microprocessors using C++ and other tools
Experience in developing application software in a .net environment for Windows
A very good understanding of advanced control methods and an interest and ability to understand and learn other leading edge techniques as applicable.
Understand and be able to manage the process of design, manufacture (using third parties), and testing of custom boards including the interfaces, communication protocols, component selection, etc.
Understand motor control
Have a practical and commercial approach appropriate to developing products that have to be produced within a time frame and budget
Ability to manage a team of up to 4 personnel including setting plans, monitoring performance against plans and achieving outcomes.
Have a keen interest in new technology and be up to date on developments in hardware, software, IOT etc.
Ideally, you will also have:
Some experience with PLCs and industrial PCs.
A good knowledge of variable frequency drives and have implemented at least one control system using them.
A good knowledge of sensors and their interfaces. Experience with and an understanding of inertial sensors systems such as those used in UAVs is desirable
A good understanding of GPS technology including aiding, DGPS and RTK.
Characteristics: This is an autonomous position where you must be self-sufficient and self-motivated to manage and complete projects in a hands-on environment. It’s also a managerial position where you’re expected to have excellent planning, organization and leadership skills to ensure projects are delivered to deadline.
